What’s Involved

Timings: 2 hour facilitated workshop (timings may be adjusted slightly eg. for full day bookings)
Venue: Astley Cheetham Art Gallery

Did you know that LS Lowry spend 28 years of his life living in Tameside? LS Lowry’s work is closely associated with ordinary life in Northern England and his house, traditional and modest, in Mottram echoes the subject matter of his work.

‍

In this workshop you can choose to focus on the way Lowry painted buildings or people. Working with a professional artist, participants will move progressively through Lowry’s painting methods to create a Lowry inspired work of their own. They will take away the skill to create painted portraits or buildings in the future by themselves.

This workshop can focus on building or portraits – please let us know which you would like to focus on when you book.

Learning Opportunities

  • Pupils will learn about an artist who lived in their locality.
  • Pupils will understand drawing in symmetry, pattern and detail using a range of materials.
  • Pupils will learn about colour mixing, using the same colour palette as Lowry used.
  • Pupils will experience an art gallery setting with exhibitions that change throughout the year. (Please note that while this workshop takes inspiration from the work of Lowry, we sadly do not have any Lowry paintings in our art collection).

Extend Your Experience

At the gallery: you can book to combine with a second workshop for a facilitated full day experience, which could be another Lowry workshop, or something different.
At school: we will send you some ideas for pre-and post- visit activities when you book this workshop. Plus, why not see if there is a Museum in a Box that links to your class topics.

Venue information

This workshop is delivered at Astley Cheetham Art Gallery:

  • The gallery is situated on the first floor of Stalybridge Library and access is via a staircase – we are sorry there is no lift up to the gallery.
  • There is no onsite coach parking. We encourage schools to walk or use public transport to the gallery where possible.
  • Please let us know if you would like your class to eat lunch at the gallery before or after your workshop.
  • A site risk assessment is available on request.
  • This workshop can be delivered from Portland Basin Museum.
