What’s Involved

Timings: A whole day visit (approx 2 x 2 hours workshops)
Venue: Portland Basin Museum
Costs: £223 for TMBC schools / £244 for non-TMBC schools

This workshop combines our Victorian Schoolroom workshop with our Put to Work workshop to create a whole day session focused on what life was like for children in Victorian Britain. Spend the morning taking lessons with our Victorian school teacher and in the afternoon being put to work in a range of different types of jobs which were given to Victorian children. This is a practical hands-on workshop that takes place among the museum’s industrial displays and period room-sets.

During the workshops, the class will be split in half and then swap over to ensure a quality experience for everyone. Participants will have time to explore the museum or get hands on with our ‘history mystery’ handling objects to investigate changes over time. Explore the past, compare to the now and imagine the future with our activity sheet and resources. We provide everything your group will need to take part.

Learning Opportunities

  • Pupils will be able to identify the key differences between education today and education in Victorian times.
  • They will understand how the school day was structured in Victorian times.
  • Undertake research for a local history or thematic study.

Extend Your Experience
