For this year’s Tameside Open Art exhibition we’ll be showcasing some of the borough’s amazing local artists online. Although Astley Cheetham Art Gallery in Stalybridge is currently closed for refurbishment, we are pleased to offer artists an opportunity to showcase and discuss theirwork.

First up is Carole from Mossley who submitted two fantastic oil paintings titled ‘Winter Sunset’ and ‘Storm at Dawn.’

Carole has been painting for many years, usually seascapes using oils, inspired by the coast of Cornwall and impressions of gardens, for which she often uses pastels or watercolour pencils.

Winter Sunset

“I have recently been experimenting with a slightly more abstract style, such as in 'Storm at Dawn', she says.  “I have used my more usual style for the other submission 'Winter Sunset'.”

“I enjoy looking at all kinds of art and photography andoften use photographs as inspiration for my painting.  I am particularly drawn to the effects of light and shade, especially at dawn and dusk, and often try to use this as a focus in my work.”

Astley Cheetham Art Gallery temporarily closed in January 2025 for approximately one year. The full art collection was packaged and transported to safe storage for the duration.

The refurbishment is part of a wider programme to regenerate Stalybridge’s cultural quarter and historical assets. The project - being delivered by Tameside Council and funded by the Government’s Capital Regeneration Programme - will see a lift and ramp access installed at the gallery, which is located on the first floor of the listed building above Stalybridge Library. It will also include repair and restoration works to the building as well as including other improvements to the lighting and display areas in the gallery.
