Rushcarts, Wakes and Disorderly Conduct : By Edward Worrall
Rushbearing celebrations are found across the country, however in the North West they took the unique form of Rushcarts. Built by the community, they formed a spectacular centrepiece for the annual Wakes celebrations and were attended by morris dancing as they were paraded around the streets of local towns and villages.
But where did this tradition come from, and why were they so popular?
Ed Worrall, morris dancer and musician, will look back at the origins of this once vital community tradition that is still seen every August in the villages of Saddleworth.
