What's on
Step into the heart of musical magic on Friday, 13th June, as the legendary Whit Friday Brass Contests return to Tameside - a spectacle hailed as “The Greatest Free Show on Earth!”
From all corners of the country and beyond, brass bands converge in a fierce yet joyous competition, performing across multiple venues throughout the borough - all in one electrifying evening! Their goal? To claim the coveted title of Whit Champions.
A Tradition Rooted in History
The roots of this grand event stretch back to the 1870s, beginning in Stalybridge before quickly expanding - first to Mossley and Uppermill, then further into Saddleworth and across Tameside. Over the decades, it has grown into an iconic celebration of musical excellence, bringing together communities, performers, and spectators for a night of sheer brass brilliance.
More Than Just a Contest
To be crowned champions, bands must perform at six of the contests, proving their musical prowess, discipline, stamina, and organisational skills - all under the pressure of a single night of performances!
Excitingly, 2025 marks the triumphant return of Stalybridge Celtic to the circuit, raising the number of contests back up to 11, a milestone not seen in years! While TMBC provides support, the contests remain a labour of love, brought to life by dedicated volunteer teams. The Friends of Tameside Whit Friday Brass Band Committee unites representatives from each contest, ensuring the event remains a cherished tradition.
Get ready for a night of thrilling competition, exceptional music, and a celebration of brass band heritage - this is an event that simply can’t be missed! 🎺🎶
