Get ready for a summer of creativity, imagination, and fun at Portland Basin Museum with Make, Do and Play! In August, join us every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 am to 3pm for a range of exciting drop in craft activities taught by professional artists. The sessions are suitable for children of all ages.

Paper Birds of Prey Kite with Rachel Wood - August 1st

Print a flying falcon or create a kestrel kite. Learn block printing techniques as you make your feathered friend. Will your bird be able to fly all the way home with you?

 

Our Museum Family Event Day - August 3rd

Join us for a FREE family-friendly event day filled with interactive activities that allow you to explore and learn about our museum and its collection. There will be different zones to do different things – from print making to learning to paint a traditional canal art rose, perhaps learn some new dance steps with our clog dancers, or just have a chat with the characters on our old street. Complete the challenges in each zone and you will receive a certificate.

 

Make Your Own Sketchbook with Rachel Wood - August 8th

Learn how to create your own sketchbook or summer scrap book using paper, willow, and twine. Capture your important memories, drawings, and findings during the holidays.

 

Picture Postcard with Rachel Wood - August 10th

Capture the essence of summer as we practice paper crafting and collage techniques to make a picture postcard. Create your own seaside scenes, sunshine, ice cream, and more. Who will you send your postcard to?

 

Incredible Kaleidoscopes with Cat Jessop - August 15th

Leap back in time and make an amazing kaleidoscope using recycled materials. See our museum in a brand new light with your incredible invention.

 

Rocking Love Birds with Carrie Williams - August 17th

Get creative and make a pair of "Rocking Love Birds." Choose your favorite color combinations, decorate them in your unique style, and watch them rock the night away.

I Can Create My Own 'Coats of Arms' with Caroline Coates -August 22nd

Discover the history of "coats of arms" and work with Caroline to create one that represents you. Include drawings of your family, pets, favourite superheroes, and more. Let your imagination soar!

 

Create a 3D Narrowboat with Caroline Coates - August 24th

Take inspiration from the canals and make your very own 3Dnarrowboat. Let your imagination sail as you decorate and personalize yourcreation with the help of our artist.

Make a Zoetrope with Caroline Coates - August 29th

Combine art, science, and engineering to create your own spinning masterpiece. Learn about zoetropes, the stop-frame animators of the past, and make your moving image come to life.

 

Make a Traditional Narrowboat Ribbon Plate with Caroline Coates - August 31st

Experience the pride and artistry of traditional narrowboat decorations. Design and create your own paper ribbon plate inspired by the "Roses and Castle" pattern or let your creativity run wild with a unique design.

 

Craft activities cost £1.30 per child, except on August 3rd when all of the activities are free! A professional artist leads each workshop and all materials are provided, ensuring an enriching and engaging experience for participants of all ages.
